Specialists
When should I see a specialist?
Specialists form the second level of care after family doctors and health centers. They specialize in individual fields of medicine and possess extensive expert knowledge in those areas. There are various types of specialists, such as dermatologists, ophthalmologists, pediatricians, pulmonologists, and many more.
To be treated by a specialist, it is best to have a referral, but you always need an appointment. Your family doctor will recommend seeing a specialist if necessary and will refer you to the appropriate place. You can also visit certain specialists without a referral, such as gynecologists, pediatricians, or ophthalmologists.
What is a specialist center?
Several specialists work together in specialist centers. They complement individual practices and offer the advantage of finding different specialists under one roof. A specialist center has been established in Hörgas, and further centers are planned in Rottenmann and Schladming, among other locations.
An example
Katharina (42) from Köflach suffers from recurring back pain. She consults her family doctor, who refers her to an orthopedist after a thorough assessment. The orthopedist examines Katharina's back and discusses her physical activity and the frequency of the pain with her. X-rays and MRI scans are also taken. The examinations reveal that Katharina suffers from a pelvic tilt. The orthopedist refers Katharina to a physiotherapist, who helps her significantly reduce her pain through specific exercises.
