General practitioner

Your general practitioner is the first point of contact for all health problems. They have broad general medical knowledge and can assess whether your symptoms are minor complaints or a serious illness.

In many cases, your general practitioner can help you and you will not need any further care. If this is necessary, your general practitioner will refer you to other doctors or to hospital.

Outside office hours, the medical on-call service is available for your health concerns. The health advice line 1450 will tell you which doctor is on duty. The paediatric on-call service can also be reached in Styria via 1450.

A new service is health centres (also called “primary care units”). Your general practitioner may work in a health centre. Health centres are often open in the early morning and evening and on Saturdays. In a health centre, in addition to general practitioners, many other health professionals also work there, for example nursing staff, physiotherapists, psychologists or social workers.

This gives you, as a patient, a wider range of services. Many care services or therapies are available in the same building as your general practitioner. Longer therapies can also be offered by this team and carried through to completion.

Walter (60) from St. Peter am Ottersbach was diagnosed with high blood pressure two years ago. Since then, he has had regular check-up appointments with his GP at the Mureck health centre. His blood pressure readings are monitored there and it is checked whether his medication is still suitable. He does not have to see the doctor every time; many appointments are handled by the nursing staff at the health centre. If Walter has questions about his blood pressure, he calls the health centre.
